Therapy Dogs at Hudson Library

Hershey and Rosie visited the library today.  They had a wonderful time with all the children reading to them.  They can't wait to come back for more stories.

Read for the Record Today

In 2006, we created Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, an international campaign to bring preschool children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all over the world. In 2008, we broke our own world record as nearly 700,000 readers shared the classic children’s tale, Corduroy. On October 8, 2009, Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar was read aloud in classrooms, libraries and homes from Japan, Germany and Brazil to cities and rural communities across America. Hushed with wonder and tickled with giggles, children around the world simultaneously experienced the joy of reading. Stay tuned for updates about the number of children that read this year!

Be Creative @ Your Library

We are just about halfway through this summer. Have you logged in any of the books that you have read this summer? All elementary school age need to have at least 6 books and the Read to Me children need at least 20 books logged by July 25th to participate in our Family Celebrations. Please visit us at the library or online to get your books logged.

Read Around the Bases Cards

The Reading with the Rays: Read your way to the Ballpark cards are now available at your local library or print one out. Then start reading your way around the bases.

Rules of the Game

Choose your favorite books or your favorite section of the St. Petersburg Times to read over the summer. As you read, track your hours by rounding the bases and collect Rays rewards along the way.



When you read enough hours to get on first base, ask your parent/guardian to initial your card and bring it to your local library. The librarian will sign your card and give you a reading reward. Round the bases by reading a total of 24 hours this summer and receive a ticket to a Rays game!



On the back of the card, keep track of your favorite books and articles you read. You can write about what you have read at the St. Petersburg Times NIE Blogging Zone at blogs.tampabay.com/nie and click on "2009 Reading with the Rays."


You can also use the same books for the Pasco County Library System's Be Creative @ Your Library Summer Reading Club. You can log your books at pascolibraries.org/kidshome.shtml and click on Express Yourself. Then you can cut and paste your opinions about the book in "Borrower Reviews" for the book in the library's new catalog. If you need help feel free to call on your Pasco County Librarians.


Join us at the Land O' Lakes Library on Friday, June 5th at approximately 1:00 p.m. when Raymond and the Rays Street Team visit the library. Bring your cameras.

Make Summer Reading Count

It’s easy!!! Registration for the summer reading club starts Tuesday, May 26. You can begin reporting the books you’ve read June 6th. Earn weekly prizes for the books you read. If you read and report on all your books by July 25th, you become a Pasco County Library System Star Reader. Star Readers will be invited to a final party with certificates and rewards for all!

Did you know that you could use the same books read for the Be Creative or Express Yourself Summer Reading Club for more rewards and prizes elsewhere???
For children in grades 3-5 This summer Pasco County Libraries have been invited to participate in Reading with the Rays: Read Your Way to the Ballpark. Just choose your favorite books from your local library or select your favorite section of the St. Petersburg Times to read over the summer. As you read, track your hours by rounding the bases and collect Rays rewards. Read Around the Bases cards coming soon to a library near you!

Read around the bases – 24 hours total!!!
3 Hours – First Base Reward: Rays Cup
5 More Hours – Second Base Reward: Rays Wristband
7 More Hours – Third Base Reward: Rays Reading Poster
9 More Hours – Home Plate Reward: 1 Ticket to a Rays Home Game (Details on the Card)

For children in grades 1-6 Kids can earn a free book, when they read 8 books this summer @ Barnes and Noble. Just download the Barnes and Noble 2009 Summer Reading with Percy Jackson and the Olympians Journal for more information - www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/

For School Age Children Read for the Record with Scholastic. Here’s your chance to attempt a new world record! Join together with other kids from your school to read as many books as you can over the summer. Here you can log the number of minutes you spend reading and keep track of how other schools are doing. Children's Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Día), is a celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. So celebrate it by visiting your local library and checkout some great books.

Adaptive Toy Collection

The Pasco County Library has a unique collection of toys for children with special needs. The adaptive toys allow children to independently experience the pleasure of learning through play. Children’s play is the building block for literacy. These toys can be used to enhance many areas of development in young children including:

  • Language Development

  • Fine & Gross Motor Skills

  • Sensory Exploration

  • Visual Perception

The Rotary Club of Keystone Sunrise has partnered with the library system to establish this special collection of toys. The toy lending collections are housed at the Hudson Regional Library and the Land O’ Lakes Library. It is available to all patrons in the county. You can request that the toy be delivered to your library branch. The collection can be viewed through the library’s homepage under “Catalog/Research.”
